A Potential Cabin

I was looking around in the newspaper classifieds and found a cabin for sale in there. Just thought I might check it out, thinking that it would probably cost more to move it than it would even be worth. I phoned the number anyway, just to get an idea how many millions of miles away it would be. Turns out, it is right in the vicinity of my acerage. I could drag it down the road for 2.5 miles and it would be there. Thats almost like some kind of a sign. I don't know though, I kinda had my heart set on building my own shack. I am kinda lazy though sometimes. This one would need quite abit of TLC on the interior to make it more liveable, so I would be building any way. The walls are built from 4x4 timbers. I'm thinkin it would have alot of air leakage for -40 degree winters. One solution would be to frame the inside with 2x4 studs and insulate, but then if I am framing, I guess I might just well be building. I don't know, this shack is a potential if the price is right. I'm not sure exactly what the right price would be just yet, I do know, however, that I would'nt be paying very close to the original asking price. This cabin is kinda what I have in mind to make me a home. It is 20x30 feet including the front deck/porch. Bottom living area is 20x20 and the top is 20x30. I think I could make it work.

  2. I like it! You can always fix it up slowly as you live in it which is one of the benefits of buying vs building.

  3. It looks real nice.

A little Tyvex, rigid insulation, and drywall, would cut the air infiltration to zip, without losing too much interior space. You could go outwards if you like the wood interior. Insulation, Tyvek, and siding; you would have to remove the windows and reinstall then, but that's not too big a deal.

  4. I agree with all 3 above comments. (Hermit Jim, Overworked Momma and Albert. But I need a little time, y'know, make the seller sweat a little. LOL. But actually, I want to compare pricing. If I were to build something from scratch of the same general size and all, how much would that cost me in comparance? I may have some time on my hands soon. And the begginning of my name IS Frugal. The main expense will probably be the inside finishing, and this one needs alot of that. Also, the moving will cost something. I'm going to let it brew for a bit and see what happens. Thanks for the comments.

  5. I'd be all over the cabin if its just a short distance, sounds like it was meant to be. More pics of your land and setup if possible. how are the bylaws there for your land, easygoing or strict??

  6. Hi Coal. The bylaws, I'm not real sure. I phoned the couny the other day and did'nt receive any info that I was really looking for. I'll try again soon and hopefully get someone else to talk to. I can't see why they would'nt allow something like that, but you never know. Thanks for stopping by.

  8. Hello Jeanie. I'm not sure what I am going to do just yet. I'll probably build one about that size and shape, or I might buy this one, if the seller comes way down to my price range. I have been doing alot of research lately and I am undecided at the moment. This shack needs alot of work for the asking price. I could build one more to my liking for alot less. We'll see what happens.
